Carnival Report 2008

Friday 8th August – Weather was fine
Sunday 10th August – Weather was fine but windy

So why oh why did it have to rain on Saturday – Carnival day!!!

This year was my first ever time organising the whole carnival procession. Wow!! I couldn’t believe how difficult it was and then the weather let me down on the day.

I must say a big big thank you to all floats, groups, helpers, volunteers and members of public who turned out in support on the carnival. I did have a good, but stressful, time once the procession entries started to turn up at Stanpit. On Friday night, I had approximately 47 entries which turned into 25/30 turning up on the day.

As you can see from the various pictures, the true British spirit/madness was in full force as we headed off from Stanpit at 18:00. There was an extra spring in the step of the procession and we completed the 3 miles in about an hour.

The trophy and award presentation was abandoned as the rain was starting to come down harder and groups were trying to get home as quickly as possible back to the dry and warm. The heavens open with a flood just as I got into my car to leave Barrack Road – phew! – not sure I could get any wetter though.

The results from the judges were:

  • Motorised (Small) – 1st place – “Rob the Fish” with his pirates
  • Motorised (Large) – 1st place – The Shamrock Football Bus
  • Walking Class – 1st place – “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe” by the Cradick Family
  • Visiting Queen and Princess – 1st place – Grange Carnival Court
  • Marching Band - The Royal British Legion
  • Most Entertaining – The Old Milk Float (Paul Rogers).

We are arranging a presentation of the trophies for next weekend (16th/17th) on the Quay. I will be contacting all the groups involved.

We collected £434.00 along the procession route – many thanks to you all.

Once again, thank you to all those that braved the weather and I look to see you all again in 2009.
